How to make smoothie freezer packs

Freezer packs turn a five-minute smoothie into a one-minute smoothie. Bag the solids once, then just add liquid and blend.

What goes in the bag

  • Fruit (fresh fruit freezes perfectly: great for ripe bananas)
  • Greens (spinach and kale freeze well)
  • Oats, chia, flax or hemp
  • Avocado chunks, carrot, cooked beet or cauliflower

What to add when blending

  • Liquid (milk, plant milk, coconut water)
  • Greek yogurt or cottage cheese
  • Protein powder, nut butter, honey or maple

Step by step

  1. Lay out 5-7 zip-top bags or reusable silicone bags.
  2. Add fruit, greens and dry add-ins to each, using a recipe like the green smoothie for beginners.
  3. Press out the air, label with the name and the liquid to add, and freeze flat.
  4. To blend, empty a bag into the blender, add liquid and wet add-ins, and blend a little longer than usual.

How long they keep

Up to 3 months in the freezer. Use within a month for the best flavor.
