Canned pumpkin is one of the most underrated smoothie ingredients: it’s creamy, full of fiber and vitamin A, and it tastes like dessert with a little spice and maple.

Ingredients

1 serving

You’ll need: Blender

Method

  1. Add the milk, yogurt, pumpkin, maple, spice and vanilla.

  2. Add the frozen banana.

  3. Blend on high until smooth. Dust with extra spice to serve.

Tips

  • Freeze leftover pumpkin purée in ½-cup portions in a muffin tin.

  • Use plain pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling (which is pre-sweetened).

Nutrition at a glance

One serving has about 345 calories, 20 g protein, 7 g fiber and 39 g sugar, including any optional sweetener. That makes it a reasonable stand-alone breakfast. Values are estimates from USDA data for the exact amounts listed; swapping milks or yogurts changes them: try our smoothie calorie calculator to check your version.

Make it ahead

Pack the solid ingredients (fruit, greens, seeds, oats) into a freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. In the morning, tip the bag into the blender, add the liquid and yogurt, and blend. A blended smoothie keeps in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours; shake before drinking. More on smoothie freezer packs.
