A bag of frozen mixed berries is the most useful thing in a smoothie freezer: they’re picked ripe, they’re cheap, and they make a thick, cold smoothie without ice.

Ingredients

1 serving

You’ll need: Blender

Method

  1. Pour the almond milk and yogurt into the blender.

  2. Add the banana, berries and honey.

  3. Blend on high until smooth, 45 seconds. Scrape down and blend again if berries get stuck.

Tips

  • Raspberry and blackberry seeds can be gritty in a basic blender: blend a little longer, or strain if it bothers you.

Variations

  • No banana: Use ½ cup more yogurt and an extra ¼ cup berries.

  • Berry-spinach: Add a cup of spinach: the purple color hides it completely.

Nutrition at a glance

One serving has about 260 calories, 15 g protein, 7 g fiber and 30 g sugar, including any optional sweetener. Pair it with eggs, toast or a handful of nuts if it’s your whole breakfast. Values are estimates from USDA data for the exact amounts listed; swapping milks or yogurts changes them: try our smoothie calorie calculator to check your version.

Make it ahead

Pack the solid ingredients (fruit, greens, seeds, oats) into a freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. In the morning, tip the bag into the blender, add the liquid and yogurt, and blend. A blended smoothie keeps in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours; shake before drinking. More on smoothie freezer packs.

Frequently asked questions

Are frozen berries as healthy as fresh?

Frozen berries are typically frozen soon after harvest and keep most of their nutrients, so they’re a solid choice for smoothies.
