Wild or regular, frozen blueberries make a gorgeous, thick smoothie. Ground flaxseed thickens it a little more and adds fiber without changing the taste.

Ingredients

1 serving

You’ll need: Blender

Method

  1. Add the milk, yogurt, flax and vanilla to the blender.

  2. Add the banana and blueberries.

  3. Blend on high for 45 seconds until smooth and purple all the way through.

Tips

  • Wild blueberries are smaller and more intense: use them if you can find them frozen.

Nutrition at a glance

One serving has about 335 calories, 21 g protein, 7 g fiber and 35 g sugar (mostly from fruit). That makes it a reasonable stand-alone breakfast. Values are estimates from USDA data for the exact amounts listed; swapping milks or yogurts changes them: try our smoothie calorie calculator to check your version.

Make it ahead

Pack the solid ingredients (fruit, greens, seeds, oats) into a freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. In the morning, tip the bag into the blender, add the liquid and yogurt, and blend. A blended smoothie keeps in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours; shake before drinking. More on smoothie freezer packs.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my blueberry smoothie thick and gel-like?

Flax and chia absorb liquid as they sit. Drink it right away or add more milk.
